| Description: |
The film begins in 1862, when French soldier Hervé Joncour (Pitt) meets his wife-to-be, Helene (Knightley). Withdrawing from the military, he begins a new career as a silk merchant, after his businessman father joins forces with an entrepreneur, Baldabiou (Molina), who plans to revive the local mills. With disease killing off silk worms across Europe, Hervé is sent to Japan to retrieve some uncontaminated eggs. At the time, Helene is in favour, rather than seeing her husband fight in "some stupid war".
Enduring an arduous journey to the Far East, Hervé finds the eggs, becoming rich in the process. But as a Dutch merchant warns him on his trip, "There is a price for everything." In this case, it's the cost of his marriage, after he strikes up a relationship with a beautiful concubine (Ashina) who lives in the remote Japanese village where Hervé obtains his precious cargo. While the language barrier stops them communicating, Hervé is immediately smitten, though upon his return to France, he declines to admit his infidelity to Helene. |
